Employee Relations Adviser - 6 Month Fixed Term Contract

You’ll be someone who is both comfortable working proactively and managing your own tasks, as well as confident collaborating with others and communicating regularly with managers, directors, and BDO’s partners to help businesses effectively. You’ll be encouraged to identify and draw attention to opportunities for enhancing our delivery and providing additional services to organisations we work with.

Reporting to the Regional Senior HR Manager. Supports and provides expert ER advice to the business, enabling high quality professional guidance on all ER issues, people policies and formal processes.

This will be a challenging and rewarding role where you will:

Business Thinking

  • Provide pragmatic case management support and advice on all employee relations issues, including (but not limited to): probation, performance development , disciplinary issues, grievance, sickness absence management and other Ad hoc ER issues (student termination meetings, flexible working requests, working time, occupational health etc.)
  • Pragmatic application of employment legislation to avoid litigation against the Firm


  • Establish strong relationships with the regional HR generalist team as well as managers/ partners in relevant business areas.
  • Be an advocate for BDO, our culture and values and actively demonstrate holding others to account to do the same


  • Responsible for regular ER updates to the regional HR team

Developing Self and Others

  • Key role in ongoing up-skilling and education of generalist and managers ref legislative and best practice developments and requirements
  • Ensuring that you keep up to date to with current employment legislation to anticipate current best and future practice
  • Responsibility to keep self-up to date in relation to external developments and trends in all of the above

You'll be someone with:


  • Strong ER generalist experience within a relevant environment
  • Proven experience and ability to set up and support ER meetings; being able to take proficient notes and provide on the spot advice. 
  • Willingness to travel across UK to support cases as and when required.
  • Proven experience of pragmatic and commercial application of business aligned ER solutions
  • Good knowledge of employment legislation and external best practice trends.
  • Strong understanding of how ER matters impact commercial operations and vice versa.
  • Proven experience of interacting with and influencing senior stakeholders
  • Ability and confidence to understand when to escalate more complex issues to HR or ER Manager. 


  • CIPD qualified
  • Experience of writing outcome letters, succinct reports and recommendation papers to senior stakeholders.
