VAT Senior Manager

Role Overview

As a Senior VAT Tax Manager you'll be joining a high performing to that provides VAT services to a wide range of clients. These include household names, global multinationals and fast paced privately owned businesses. UK VAT experience/knowledge is essential however a significant amount of work will involve working with the BDO International network to advise clients on global VAT issues.

You'll deal with all matters relating to the management of a portfolio of existing clients and the development of targets to ensure the continued growth of the business. You will also support Partners & Directors in both client work and in the management of the group and on occasions the practice.

You'll be consultative and proactively manage their own workload. Excellent communication skills and an ability to be part of a collaborative team is essential.  Furthermore, the senior manager will look to identify and develop opportunities for new work.


To act as a key point of contact within the firm for the client, working closely with the wider team. This will involve responding quickly to, as well as anticipating, client requests/needs, keeping clients informed of progress in relation to all aspects of the service provided, and maintaining regular contact with clients.

  • There will be an expectation that you will take full responsibility for project delivery and review of final client advice

  • Lead large scale or complex projects within own area of expertise

  • Manage a portfolio of clients including control of billings and cash collection within the firms’ criteria

  • Review of work prepared by more junior members of staff

  • Liaise with HMRC

  • Ensure assignments are completed within agreed budgets and plan staff assignments to give an appropriate spread of experience

  • Ensure that the firm’s quality control procedures are adhered to including second partner review

  • Identify risk and technical matters whilst exercising judgement within agreed parameters.


  • Actively participate in the management of the VAT group, providing support to the wider tax team and other parts of the firm

  • Counsel, appraise, develop and motivate staff as appropriate

Business development:

  • Recognise business development opportunities and inform and work with the wider team and the client to develop these when they arise

  • Participate in bids/proposals for new work

  • Develop your own network of contacts internally and externally to win own work and cross selling.

Communication and representation:

  • Develop contact with clients and maintain contact as appropriate to ensure the firm has the confidence of the client

  • Act as a liaison between the client and other specialist service groups within BDO

  • Consult with colleagues and Partners on technical and risk matters where appropriate.


  • A curious mind and a can-do attitude

  • Significant understanding of and previous experience within UK VAT.

  • In-depth knowledge of recent key updates and areas of focus in the area of VAT

  • Ability to manage a large and varied client portfolio

  • Ability and desire to actively seek opportunities for further work

  • Experience of dealing directly with HMRC

  • Experience of dealing with client senior management and key stakeholders

  • Educated to degree level, and ideally CTA qualified or equivalent
