"As someone in a straight-passing relationship, I have never faced any adverse challenges in the work environment. However, this also means that it's sometimes harder to be accepted within queer communities, as people may feel I don't understand the struggles faced by those with a more obviously queer relationship or lifestyle. Despite this, being part of the PRIDE network with such a variety of people on different parts of the queer spectrum has been a positive experience. It has made me feel much more confident in encouraging others to get involved too.

BDO has been incredibly supportive of my queer identity. The presence of the PRIDE network and the Be Yourself pillar provides a much-needed voice for individuals within our community. While many big companies accept and encourage diversity, it is not always celebrated and given a platform. Having an active and visible network has helped encourage many people to be themselves in the workplace and not feel like they have to hide their identity out of fear of judgment.

To me, authenticity means not feeling like you have to suppress a part of yourself to feel safe or accepted. It means having the freedom to be unapologetically you without fear of consequence. I am fortunate to be very comfortable with who I am and have not felt any need to suppress parts of myself at work.

I believe BDO is already doing a great job in supporting queer individuals. The addition of mental health first aiders is an extra branch of support that can be leaned on, further enhancing the inclusive environment."

Amanda Byrne's story is a testament to BDO's commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive workplace. By fostering a culture of authenticity and providing platforms like the PRIDE network, BDO ensures that all employees can feel confident and valued. Amanda's experience underscores the importance of belonging and pride, not only during LGBTQ+ history month, but continuously.
