Hi Glennis, so tell us; what do you do at BDO?
My official job title is SSC Assistant in the Business Support Hub. Essentially, I handle a variety of tasks to keep the chargeable staff focused on their work. This includes everything from research and data entry to managing mailboxes and supporting business development.
Nice, can you tell us more about the tasks you handle then?
Sure. I take on bigger tasks that require more time and effort. For example, I do a lot of research tasks, like going into LinkedIn, CMS, and Companies House to find data and fill spreadsheets. This helps our team identify potential clients. I also lead the public sector mailbox, which involves dealing with portals and passwords, ensuring the right information gets to the right people.
It sounds like you play a crucial role in the team. How do you feel about that?
I see my role as helping to keep the chargeable staff doing chargeable work, which is essential for the business. I’ve built strong relationships with my requesters, and they appreciate the help I provide. It’s a nice situation to be in.
You mentioned that your role has evolved over the years. Can you elaborate on that?
Yes, my role has changed significantly. Before joining the Business Support Hub, I worked in facilities for seven years. That was a high-stress job, especially during the COVID outbreak. Moving to the Business Support Hub was a game-changer for me. I can focus on tasks that I enjoy, like working on spreadsheets and managing long-term projects.
So what is it that you love about your role and your team?
I love the respect and autonomy I have in my role. I can get on with my tasks without having to constantly ask for work. The team is supportive, and I feel like they have my back. This is the first team where I’ve felt truly respected and appreciated.
How would you describe your time at BDO in three words?
That’s a tough one because there are so many. I’ll go with varied, respected, and fulfilling. My roles have been diverse, and I’ve always felt respected by my colleagues. Overall, it’s been a fulfilling experience.
So you had a varied career before joining BDO. How has that experience helped you in your current role?
My varied background has given me a good all-round business knowledge. I’ve worked in different industries and roles, which has helped me adapt to different tasks and challenges at BDO. It’s also made me appreciate the supportive environment here even more.
And what about to people thinking about a career at BDO; what do you say to them?
I’d say look at the big picture. It’s not just about the salary, it’s about the whole package. BDO offers great benefits, flexibility, and a supportive environment. There are plenty of opportunities for development and growth, even for admin staff, which wasn’t the case 20 years ago.
OK so outside of work, you have a passion for travelling. How do you balance that with your job?
I often buy extra annual leave to fulfil my travel aspirations. My husband and I decided to travel while we can, and we’ve been to some amazing places. BDO’s flexibility allows me to balance my work and personal life effectively.
Ah, you’re an adventurer! What’s next on your travel list?
We’re planning a trip to Helsinki, Tallinn, and Riga soon. We recently visited the Christmas markets in Nuremberg and had a fantastic time. We also have plans to visit Venice again and explore more of Switzerland. Travelling is a big part of our lives, and we try to make the most of it.
