Zane, an Audit Trainee in BDO's Audit team, shares his experiences as a LGBTQ+ individual in the workplace and his reflections on LGBTQ+ History Month. Growing up in Canada, Zane faced challenges and homophobia, but his journey has been one of resilience and authenticity. At BDO, he has found a supportive environment where he can be his true self. This article delves into Zane's story, highlighting the importance of belonging and pride in both personal and professional life.
Growing up in Canada, I was fortunate to live in a country with a progressive stance on same-sex relationships. However, even in progressive places, there are individuals who prioritise their beliefs over the rights of queer people. My childhood in a rural setting was marked by homophobia from peers who echoed their parents' beliefs. I lived in fear, knowing that many people I was told to look up to felt my existence was immoral. At 14, I witnessed a classmate being bullied for his effeminate voice, which left a lasting impact on me. It wasn't until I was 17 that I came out as gay and realised that most people respected me, though it often felt like they respected me despite my sexuality.
From my first day at BDO, I found an environment where I could be myself without hesitation. I didn't have to avoid using the word 'husband' when talking about my partner. The trainees in my year in Scotland were incredibly supportive, and my people manager, Liezl, encouraged my growth and supported me in taking on a PRIDE Champion role. Authenticity, to me, means being yourself without constantly being on guard for fear of being singled out.
At work, I express my authentic self by being open and approachable, though my focus is more intense while working. Pride History Month is a time for me to reflect on the progress we've made in queer rights and to recognise the ongoing struggles faced by queer people worldwide. This year, more than ever, we must continue to stand up for progress.
In my years of working and studying at university, I've seen the younger generation challenge the status quo through expression and questioning established ways. This inspires me and reminds me of the importance of constantly rethinking our purpose and adding value in new ways to reach today's audience, whether they are colleagues or clients.
Zane's story is a testament to the power of authenticity and the importance of a supportive work environment. At BDO, he has found a place where he can be his true self and contribute meaningfully to the firm. His reflections on LGBTQ+ History Month highlight the progress made and the ongoing need for advocacy and support for LGBTQ+ rights. Zane's experiences remind us of the importance of belonging and pride in both personal and professional life.
