What makes life at BDO different from anywhere else? How does an audit apprentice here navigate their role and balance work with personal growth? Cindy, an audit professional in BDO’s School Leaver Apprenticeship programme, shares her inspiring journey, interesting creative hobbies, and why she believes BDO truly goes beyond the ordinary.

BDO UK

Hi Cindy! We’re curious – why did you choose an apprenticeship over university or starting work immediately?
For me, it came down to progression and avoiding student debt. I realised that whether I started at 18 in an apprenticeship or at 21 after university, I’d end up in the same place – taking the same exams and reaching the same milestones. By choosing the apprenticeship route, I could progress faster and start earning right away.

Plus, I had two examples at home: my sister, who went to university, and my brother, who completed an apprenticeship. Watching their experiences helped me decide that starting my career through an apprenticeship was the right move. I’d gain practical experience, have financial stability, and still have time to explore other options if needed.

And what drew you to BDO over other firms?
While many apprenticeships offer similar qualifications, it was the culture and people at BDO that won me over. During the assessment process, the interviewers were friendly and welcoming, unlike the colder vibes I experienced elsewhere. BDO’s supportive atmosphere made me feel at home from the start.

We’re lucky to have you! So, how did you decide on an audit apprenticeship?
To be honest, it just kind of happened! I loved maths at school, so I was looking for options that would allow me to build a career and gain a qualification, and I found accounting. When I researched audit further, I thought, “This could work for me.” While there wasn’t a specific “aha” moment, I know this is the right path for me – I really enjoy the problem-solving and people-facing aspects of the role!

What does a typical day look like for you now that you’ve started?
Every day is pretty varied, but usually, I start by checking emails for responses to requests I sent the day before. Then, I plan my tasks based on what’s been provided by the audited entity and I usually have a quick check-in with my manager or update our tracker.

Before lunch, I focus on getting as much done as possible! I’ll send follow-up requests and then continue my tasks in the afternoon. Typically, you’ll find me responding to queries, reviewing information, and preparing reports.

And then, when you’re finished – how do you spend your time outside of work?
I have a few creative hobbies that help me unwind, like drawing, animating, and crocheting. I love working on digital art using apps like Procreate and Flipaclip, and recently, I’ve been collaborating with a friend on a short, animated story. Crocheting is another passion – it’s relaxing, and I’m planning to make plushies once I find the perfect yarn!

Sounds like you’re very busy, in and outside of the office! How does BDO encourage you to maintain a work-life balance?
It's pretty flexible. If you set boundaries – like saying you can’t work late on certain days – BDO respects that. Managers also plan workloads to minimise overtime, and I love that I have the option to work from home when appropriate, which suits me perfectly.

How would you describe the support you’ve received at BDO?
It’s been incredible. Managers who encourage you to log off on time, structured revision days for exams, and my fantastic people manager means there’s help with any issue. BDO really listens to feedback and takes action, such as adding in extra consolidation days for trainees to focus on studying during work hours for their qualification.

Sounds like you’re learning loads! What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned so far?
How much I love learning new shortcuts in Excel! It might sound silly, but every day I discover something new that makes my work so much more efficient. It’s endlessly fascinating. I’ve also learned to be more confident when speaking to people I don’t know. In my work, I often have calls with senior leaders across exciting businesses – and now I really enjoy interacting with people both in and outside of my team.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?
Do your research! Understand what each apprenticeship offers and how it aligns with your career goals. If you’re considering accounting, I’d highly recommend the apprenticeship route because it combines experience with qualifications, giving you a head start.

What makes your experience at BDO beyond the ordinary?
Cindy: Definitely the community. Everyone is so open and supportive—it feels like you’re part of something bigger. Even as a trainee, I’ve had conversations with CFOs and partners, which has been both surprising and empowering.
