AI at BDO: Shaping the Future of Work, Together
Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we work — and at BDO, we’re embracing that change thoughtfully and responsibly. For early careers talent considering a future in accountancy, it’s natural to have questions about what AI means for your role. The reality is that AI is already part of our day-to-day — and our people are central to how we use it.
Our approach is guided by BDO’s AI Principles: we use AI to augment human capability, support better decision-making, and create space for more meaningful work. We’re focused on transparency, accountability, and ensuring our people are equipped to thrive in a tech-enabled future.

        Working Smarter with AI
Across BDO, teams are using AI to streamline tasks, spark creativity, and improve efficiency. In our Shared Service Centre, Tim Devonshire-Hughs and his team have integrated AI into their daily operations.
These tools are helping teams deliver faster and more effectively, while maintaining high standards. “Importantly, while AI accelerates our work, its outputs still require critical human oversight and expert review,” Tim explains. “This ensures quality and accuracy, reinforcing the idea that AI is a collaborative tool.”

        AI as a Creative Partner
In Innovation, Maggie Quinlan uses generative AI to support a wide range of activities — from “summarising and/or querying large amounts of information, or as a brainstorming partner that helps me with blue-sky thinking and strategy formation.”
She describes AI as a tool that enhances her work. “I see AI as my own personal assistant – it helps keep me on track and helps me organise my thoughts, but the final product is still mine.”

        Responsible Use in Recruitment
In Talent Acquisition, Andrew Harvey highlights how AI is used to support communication and organisation. “We use AI to support our work in several meaningful ways. For example, tools like Microsoft 365 Copilot help us refine written communication, whether it’s candidate outreach or internal updates. Many of us don’t have English degrees, so AI helps us express ideas clearly and professionally, ensuring our messaging is inclusive and engaging.”
He also notes how AI helps the team stay present and productive. “During internal meetings, AI-powered note-taking tools allow us to stay fully present in conversations. These tools capture key points and convert them into actionable summaries, which we can share with stakeholders. This ensures transparency and follow-through, without compromising engagement.”
Andrew’s perspective reflects BDO’s broader commitment to responsible innovation. “Our approach to AI is grounded in responsibility. We’re aware of the myths and concerns surrounding its use, especially in recruitment. That’s why we’re transparent about where it fits in and where it doesn’t. AI supports our work, but it doesn’t do it for us. It’s a co-pilot, not a pilot.”
