Supporting Working Parents at BDO

At BDO, we know that being a parent is one of life’s most rewarding—and demanding—roles. Whether you're navigating nursery drop-offs, school meetings, or teenage milestones, we believe your career should support—not compete with—your family life.

That’s why we’ve created a culture where working parents can thrive. From flexible working and emergency leave to peer support and volunteering opportunities, we’re committed to helping you grow your career while being present for the moments that matter most.

Flexibility that fits real life

We understand that no two families are the same. That’s why flexibility is built into the way we work. Whether it’s adjusting your hours, working remotely, or managing your schedule around family commitments, our approach is designed to give you the freedom to make work work for you.

For Jason, a Senior Manager and dad, this flexibility makes all the difference:

“BDO’s flexible working means my wife and I can make sure we are always able to pick our daughter up at the end of the day.”

A network of support

Our Working Parents and Carers Support Network is an employee-led group that brings together mums, dads, and carers from across the firm. It’s a space to connect, share experiences, and support one another through the ups and downs of parenting.

The network hosts regular sessions on topics that matter to parents – from returning to work after parental leave to caring for children with additional needs. It also helps signpost colleagues to our family-friendly policies and provides a safe, supportive space to talk openly.

Amber describes it as:

“Parents Network is a very important platform to break the ice. We have a safe platform to discuss specific needs, give and get support, having a listening ear and sometimes a shoulder to cry on as well. My manager and team members are very supportive if/when I need to adjust my working hours to manage my kids’ health and education related appointments/meetings. Both paid and unpaid carer leave is a lifeline for us. This gives me confidence to work more effectively.”

Staying connected to what matters

We also encourage our people to use their 5+5 volunteering days – five days for personal volunteering and five for firm-wide initiatives. Many parents use this time to stay connected to their children’s lives outside of work, like Natalie does:

“I always ensure I use my volunteering days, some of which have been used to support my children on school trips, forest school volunteer and reading in class, being able to keep this connection with my children’s school has been invaluable.”

Jason has also used his volunteering time to stay involved in his daughter’s world:

“BDO’s 5+5 volunteering days gives me time off to volunteer, which includes joining school trips as a chaperone and supporting my ability to volunteer as a Scout leader for my daughter and her friends.”

A culture that understands

Supporting working parents isn’t just about policies – it’s about empathy, flexibility, and trust. It’s about creating an environment where you can bring your whole self to work, knowing that your family life is respected and supported.

Amber puts it simply:

“BDO is committed to back the statement of advocacy, adherence, and allegiance expressed for parents/carers by deeds not only by words.”

We don’t believe you should have to choose between your career and your family. At BDO, you can keep progressing – without compromise.
