What first sparked your interest in accountancy?
In school, I was one of the top performers in maths classes. I think this is because from a young age, I saw maths as being connected to accounting.
Later on, when I had the opportunity to do a job shadow in an accounting firm, I didn't really enjoy it because the person I shadowed was working on his own. This made me realise that I wanted to work with people, which led me to study psychology.
What was it about psychology that interested you?
I loved the idea of being able to understand people better and help them in their lives. I was particularly interested in health psychology, clinical psychology, and research.
After I graduated, I got a job as a support worker with mental health patients. I then became a therapy worker, which was a great experience. And then I got a dream job in psychology as a trainee Clinical Associate psychologist. I thought I was set.
What made you switch back to accountancy?
I wanted a career that would allow me to travel and work in different countries. I realised that if I wanted to continue doing psychology, I’d have to work for a non-governmental organisation, and that wasn't something I wanted to do. So, I followed my heart back to accountancy.
I did a lot of research and that's when I came across BDO and applied for the graduate programme.
What was it about BDO that attracted you?

What made you join the Audit scheme?
Auditing was always something that I was interested in. I liked the idea of working with businesses and helping them with their financials. I also liked the idea of being financial police, as I have a curious mind! I think that's why I was drawn to auditing- it's a field that is always changing and you have to be constantly learning to keep up.
You've only been here seven months, but what three things have excited you most on your BDO journey so far?
I would say my first highlight was going on an engagement to Cambridge. It was a really nice opportunity to get to know other people and learn from them. That was a highlight for me because it showed me that this job is not just based in London - there are opportunities to travel and meet people from other teams.

The second highlight for me was having a people manager. I think it's interesting that they're called people managers instead of managers. I've been really encouraged to make the most of my psychology skills, even though I'm in the audit stream. I'd say that's been a highlight for me.
And the third highlight has got to be when a colleague and I planned a lunchtime session with a psychologist to discuss mental health. I had been there less than four months at the time. This was a great opportunity to use my passion for psychology and bring awareness to the connection between mental health and race. I met a lot of new colleagues too. I'm also about to sign up as one of BDO’s mental health first aiders so I can keep giving back.
