Through our conversation, we got to know more about her journey, her day-to-day responsibilities, and how she balances her professional life with her personal passions. Let’s delve into Bethany's story, a journey that started as a school leaver and has led to a fulfilling career at one of the top accountancy firms.

Hi Beth, what was your background before joining BDO?

Well, I was a school leaver and had worked at both a Big 4 firm and another top 10 accountancy firm. I started off in accounts and transitioned over to tax before finishing my professional exams. This solid foundation prepared me well for the diverse challenges I face at BDO.

So why did you decide to choose BDO and what is it that makes you stay?

To be honest, I chose BDO because I had heard great things about the firm through the market and my professional network. Many of my former colleagues had joined BDO and spoke highly of its culture. The firm's reputation for looking after its people and talent was a significant factor in my decision. The supportive and collaborative environment keeps me motivated to stay.

And what about your day-to-day role; what does that look like?

It's dynamic, involving the management of a portfolio of tax clients, both corporate and personal. Each day is different; some days are spent catching up with clients through calls or face-to-face meetings to discuss their tax needs. Other days, I'm researching tax technical issues and reviewing financials with my team. The variety keeps me engaged and constantly learning.

OK, but how would you describe your job to someone who had no idea?

I’d tell them that I help people pay the right amount of tax but no, I’m not the actual tax man!

But what's the most difficult bit about working in your team?

Managing multiple projects simultaneously requires organization and strong communication skills. I often work with several senior team members on different deadlines, making collaboration essential. Fortunately, the friendly environment at BDO facilitates effective teamwork.

And what is a fun fact about BDO that no one else knows?

There’s a rumour about the BDO logo relating to all our founders. I haven’t yet found out if it’s true or not but it’s one I’ve heard a few times. If I meet you in our canteen we can debate whether it’s true or not!

What opportunities for the future are you excited for at BDO?

I'm excited about growing my internal network at BDO and visiting different offices. The firm's flexible working policy is a big plus, allowing me to work from locations that suit me best. This flexibility supports my professional growth and work-life balance.

But you must have heard some misconceptions about accounting before you understood it completely, right?

Initially, I worried that my colleagues would be intimidating and unapproachable. However, I've found that everyone is incredibly friendly and easy to talk to, which makes collaboration on client work much smoother. I also appreciate the social events that continue despite the pandemic, unlike my past experiences at other firms.

What do you do outside work to relax?

I love spending time in coffee shops and attending shows and gigs whenever possible. BDO’s flexible working policy helps me manage my workload while pursuing my hobbies, ensuring I maintain a healthy work-life balance.

How do you fulfil that hobby/passion alongside work?

The flexible working policy at BDO is key. It allows me to adjust my schedule to fit in my favourite activities, ensuring I can relax and enjoy my personal time without compromising my professional responsibilities.
