So Sia, what was your background before you joined BDO?

My journey began in the quaint village of Kassiopi on the island of Corfu, Greece. Leaving behind the sun-kissed shores and my loved ones, I embarked on a path of academic pursuit at the University of Glasgow. With dreams of becoming a translator, I immersed myself in languages and literature, eventually obtaining both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. However, my career aspirations took a turn, leading me to the dynamic world of audit.

Wow, so you left the sunny shores of Greece. Why did you decide to choose BDO, and what makes you stay?

A serendipitous encounter at a career fair introduced me to the possibilities within BDO's audit graduate program. Intrigued by the prospect of combining practical experience with professional development, I took the leap and never looked back. The supportive environment, diverse opportunities, and unwavering camaraderie have been the pillars of my journey at BDO, keeping me engaged and motivated for the past five years.

What does your day-to-day role look like?

As an Audit Assistant Manager, no two days are alike. From collaborating with diverse teams to working on-site at audited entities, each day presents a new adventure. Whether in the office or in the field, I strive to ensure companies present a fair and accurate picture to the world, navigating complexities with precision and professionalism.

What is is that keeps you excited at BDO?

Embracing my role as a people manager, I find joy in guiding and supporting new trainees, paying forward the mentorship I received. As I continue to grow professionally, I look forward to exploring new avenues for personal and professional development within the BDO family.

OK, but what's the most difficult bit about working in your stream?

The ever-changing nature of audit presents both exhilarating opportunities and formidable challenges. Staying organised amidst multiple tasks and engagements requires meticulous planning and adaptability, a skill set I continue to hone with each passing day.

Outside of work then; what do you do to relax?

Beyond the realms of audit, I find solace in the company of friends and family, indulging in live music events and exploring the great outdoors. Whether embarking on scenic hikes or testing my limits with indoor rock climbing, I prioritise maintaining a healthy work-life balance, ensuring time for passion and relaxation amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life.

You must have come across some misconceptions about BDO or accounting before you started though?

Contrary to popular belief, accounting is not just about numbers—it's inherently people-oriented. In the dynamic realm of audit, effective communication and teamwork are paramount. Embracing my innate affinity for interpersonal connections, I've found fulfilment and purpose in my career journey at BDO.

From the tranquil shores of Corfu to the vibrant streets of Glasgow, Sia's journey exemplifies the spirit of exploration, resilience, and growth. As she continues to navigate the dynamic world of audit, her story serves as a testament to the endless possibilities that await within the realms of BDO.
