Hi Sam, what's your story about then?
Hey there! I'm thrilled to share my journey into the world of international audit at BDO. As a Senior Manager in the International Sector, I've had the privilege of navigating through the complexities of multinational companies and fostering meaningful relationships with diverse teams across the globe. From analysing financial data to shaping audit strategies, every day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth.
What was your background before joining BDO?
Before diving into the world of international audit at BDO, I earned my ACA qualification at another accounting firm in London, specialising in the Technology and Media sector. Even before that though, my journey began with an Economics degree from Loughborough University, so you could say I've had audit and accountancy skills from an early age.
So why BDO then, and more importantly, what makes you stay?
BDO beckoned with its cultural alignment and promise of a better work-life balance. The people proposition resonated deeply with me, and I was drawn to the firm's growth strategy. Five and a half years in, it's the people who make me stay. BDO fosters an open and safe environment where trust and genuine relationships flourish. Moreover, I relish the opportunity to shape the strategy and direction of my stream, knowing that every idea is welcomed and supported.
OK, so talk us through your day-to-day role then.
As a Senior Manager in the International Sector of the London Audit Group, my days are a whirlwind of collaboration and analysis. I lead engagement teams, working closely with multinational companies across the globe. Our goal? To understand each entity, develop robust audit strategies, and execute them flawlessly. Surprisingly, my time isn't spent buried in my laptop; instead, it's filled with meaningful conversations and teamwork. Outside audit engagements, I spearhead the quality pillar for our sector, ensuring audit excellence through comprehensive training programs.
Let's break that down a bit; how would you describe your job to a complete stranger?
Basically, I'm like a financial detective! I analyse and review companies' financial data to make sure everything adds up correctly. Since these companies are scattered worldwide, I get to work with lots of different people and travel to various places.
Nice! You must be thinking about the future though; what excites you at BDO?
The future at BDO brims with excitement and possibility. I'm eager to witness the firm's evolution as we challenge market norms and adapt to changing regulations. Our growth trajectory promises to shake up the industry, and I can't wait to see how other firms respond.
What had you heard about BDO or accounting before you started out?
One common misconception is that accounting is dull and monotonous. But let me tell you, it's anything but! Every day is a new adventure, filled with variety and excitement. Working with different companies and people keeps things fresh and engaging.
It can't all be roses though - what’s the most difficult bit about working in your stream?
The fast-paced nature of audit keeps me on my toes. While it's energising, staying updated on relevant changes amidst constant flux can be challenging.
So how do you relax outside work to reduce those challenges?
When I'm not crunching numbers, you'll find me on the netball court or exploring new corners of the world. Netball keeps me active and social, while travel feeds my adventurous spirit. And thanks to the support from BDO, balancing work and passion is a breeze.
Here's a nugget for you: the dashes in BDO's logo are reported to honour members who have passed away; a touching tribute to our legacy. I'll let you work out if that's a truth or a myth though...
