This International Women's Day, we're reflecting on the remarkable journeys and achievements of women at BDO who have continued to break barriers and inspire change. The theme this year, "For All Women and Girls – Rights, Equality, Empowerment," resonates deeply as we acknowledge both past pioneers and current trailblazers.
To bring these stories to life, we sat down with some of the incredible women at BDO to hear about their experiences firsthand. Their insights highlight not only personal milestones but also the progress we’ve made as a firm in fostering gender equality.
International Women's Day @ bdo
Listen to our incredible colleagues as they share with us their accomplishments.
It’s inspiring to see how far we’ve come since Mary Harris Smith became the first female accountant in 1919, followed by Ethel Watts, the first woman to complete the ACA in 1924. Fast forward to today, and women across BDO continue to achieve significant milestones, pushing boundaries and redefining what's possible.
During our interviews, Sophie, Lead Partner, shared how she paved the way for women in leadership roles at BDO. "In 2002, I became BDO's first female departmental leader as the lead partner for Epsom, and then the whole southern region in 2005. I then became the first female leadership team member in 2008." Her career has been marked by numerous firsts, exemplifying the progressive steps BDO has taken to ensure women are represented at all levels.

For many, breaking barriers isn't just about career advancement—it’s also about fostering inclusivity. Tannyth, Partner, spoke about the importance of creating environments where people of all abilities can thrive. "Overcoming the challenges of a physical disability and workplace biases, I've learned the importance of creating inclusive environments—educating others about unique needs and embracing support systems that empower individuals to thrive and reach their full potential." Her story is a testament to the strength found in inclusive leadership.
Elizabeth, Partner, also shared how BDO has supported women through key life moments. "I am very proud to have been the first female promoted partner during my maternity leave for my second child." This milestone demonstrates the firm's dedication to ensuring that professional growth and personal life are not mutually exclusive. Her experience serves as an inspiration for those navigating career progression alongside family responsibilities.
Diversity and representation remain central to BDO’s values, and Olivia, Partner, made history in 2024 as the first woman of Black heritage to achieve partner status in the UK. "I can't wait to see how BDO continues to embrace diversity." Her success underscores the importance of diverse leadership in shaping a workplace where everyone feels valued and included.
As we celebrate these women and their stories, we're reminded that at BDO, we're truly "in it together." Their achievements reflect not only their individual determination but also the collective effort of an organization committed to rights, equality, and empowerment. Today, and every day, we continue to support and inspire the next generation of women to follow in their remarkable footsteps.
