Lizzie, an Assistant Manager in Audit at BDO, shares her experiences as a queer individual in the workplace and her local community. Her story highlights the importance of authenticity, representation, and the support she has received from her colleagues and the PRIDE Network at BDO. Lizzie's journey is a testament to the inclusive and supportive environment that BDO fosters for all its employees.

“Growing up, I always knew I was queer. I recall discussing with friends why they weren't queer and trying to understand their perspectives. My biggest challenge wasn't coming out to my family or friends but finding my place within the queer community. As a bisexual, I often felt "too straight" for the queer community and "too queer" for the straight community. Bi-erasure has been a difficult topic for me, with people assuming my sexuality based on my partner's gender. Despite this, I remain open about my bisexuality to provide representation for young queer individuals who might not know the label "bisexual" exists.
In the workplace, my experience has been positive. I have had numerous opportunities within the PRIDE Network to support my community and educate my office on important topics. My colleagues have been incredibly supportive, backing the PRIDE Network's initiatives like quizzes, bake sales, and local drag nights. These activities have helped me find my place within the queer community and feel affirmed in my identity.

For me, authenticity means being true to oneself and one's values. I believe that when people can be their authentic selves, they can focus their energy on helping others, progressing their careers, and building relationships. My family has been supportive of my queer identity, allowing me to explore it comfortably. Although I faced some difficult conversations when bringing my first girlfriend home, I remain steadfast in my bisexuality regardless of who I am dating.
LGBTQ+ History Month holds significant importance for me. It is a time to reflect on the history of the queer community, acknowledge the contributions of those who paved the way, and look to the future to address ongoing challenges. I believe that staying vocal and active is crucial for driving change and overcoming obstacles faced by the queer community.”
Lizzie's story is a powerful example of the inclusive and supportive culture at BDO. Her experiences highlight the importance of authenticity, representation, and community support. BDO's commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for all employees is evident in the support Lizzie has received from her colleagues and the PRIDE Network.
