SSC Supervisor - Expatriate Tax

Ideas | People | Trust

We’re BDO. An accountancy and business advisory firm, providing the advice and solutions entrepreneurial organisations need to navigate today’s changing world.

We work with the companies that are Britain’s economic engine – ambitious, entrepreneurially-spirited and high‑growth businesses that fuel the economy – and directly advise the owners and management teams leading them.

We’ll broaden your horizons

Our Shared Service Centre team (SSC) provides essential support to a number of teams across our firm. As well as assisting on large-scale operations, beyond the capacity of a core specialist team, they provide the unparalleled expertise we need to keep moving forward. As part of this friendly department, you’ll have the chance to work on exciting projects and develop your skillset. There’s real opportunity, making it a great chance to use industry knowledge and experience to solve problems in your next career step, or it can be a place to learn if you’re just starting out. If you want to work on important projects and explore your potential, we’ll give you the friendly, supportive working environment to go far.

We’ll help you succeed

Leading organisations trust us because of the quality of our advice. That quality grows from a thorough understanding of their business, and that understanding comes from working closely with them and building long-lasting relationships.

You’ll be someone who is both comfortable working proactively and managing your own tasks, as well as confident collaborating with others and communicating regularly with senior managers, directors, and BDO’s partners to help businesses effectively. You’ll be encouraged to identify and draw attention to opportunities for enhancing our delivery and providing additional services to organisations we work with.

Our Shared Service Centre is on the lookout for an experienced Tax Supervisor to lead the daily operations of the Expatriate Tax team. You'll focus on operations, people, stakeholders, and commercial aspects. Supported by operational team leaders and technical experts, you'll ensure the Hub runs smoothly, providing top-notch service to our internal clients and supporting the Firm’s Tax Strategy.

Role Overview:

The Expatriate Tax Hub offers UK Expatriate and US Tax compliance services to the Tax Stream. Your role is crucial in driving the Hub's technical growth and supporting the Tax Stream's long-term plan. We're seeking someone with strong technical knowledge and experience to focus on quality, training, and knowledge sharing. Based in Liverpool, this role follows a hybrid model with two office days per week.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand the client journey from onboarding to tax return completion for international mobile employees.
  • Lead stakeholder meetings on team quality, discussing technical tax treatments and legislative changes.
  • Coach junior team members on technical areas, ensuring they excel in tax return processing.
  • Oversee the technical output of the UK Expatriate Tax and US Personal Tax team, meeting time and quality standards.
  • Ensure adherence to internal and external quality control procedures.
  • Improve operational effectiveness and efficiency of the 15-member team.
  • Work independently or collaboratively, focusing on problem-solving skills.
  • Collaborate with BDO’s regional client-facing teams on operational performance, acting as a contact point and escalation.

Technical Requirements and Professional Skills:

Essentials:

  • Strong technical experience in UK Personal Tax legislation, especially Expatriate Tax.
  • Proven experience in SLA delivery, quality management, skills gap training, and embedding a ‘Quality First’ culture.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and influencing skills.
  • Confident in interacting with senior stakeholders, providing appropriate challenges.
  • Exceptional time management, organisation, and prioritisation skills. Lead by example to optimise team performance.
  • Ability to use initiative and take a flexible approach.

Desirable:

  • Technical experience in US Personal Tax.
  • Accountancy qualification (AAT/ATT/CTA – part or fully qualified) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in Professional Services.
  • Experience in performing or managing Accountancy Tax-related work.

This role offers a fantastic opportunity to impact the UK Expatriate Tax and US Personal Tax Hub, driving its growth and evolution. If you have the right skills and experience, we’d love to hear from you.

You’ll be able to be yourself; we’ll recognise and value you for who you are and celebrate and reward your contributions to our business. We’re committed to agile working, and we offer everyone the opportunity to work in ways that suit them, their teams, and the task at hand.
