You’ll be someone who is both comfortable working proactively and managing your own tasks, as well as confident collaborating with others and communicating regularly with senior managers, directors, and BDO’s partners to help businesses effectively. You’ll be encouraged to identify and draw attention to opportunities for enhancing our delivery and providing additional services to organisations we work with.

The Role:

The role of a Team Lead is to empower, inspire, support and develop the capabilities of not just their direct reports but the team as a whole to set them and their clients up for success.

It involves meeting regularly with their team members managing, coaching, motivating and engaging their them throughout the year to ensure they achieve their full potential, with the ability to flex their style as needed to support and develop the individuals within the team.

The People Manager role includes a number of key areas:

Wellbeing

  • Have an oversight and monitor absences, including holidays, sickness absence and other absences within Workday ensuring that requested absences fit in with the needs of the department and are in line with the relevant Firm policies
  • Where appropriate, consult with the Partner and/or HR to ensure any wellbeing issues are addressed consistently and in a timely fashion
  • Champion Wellbeing policy, innovations and engagement throughout your direct reports and the wider team

Recruitment and Onboarding

  • Responsible for the new Team Member’s local onboarding and induction process, including the allocation of buddies and devising new starter training programmes within the hub, linking in with national and SSC induction schedules as appropriate.
  • Drive and support the integration of new employees to understand the Firm and Streams activity, priorities, policy, and strategy
  • Understand new Team Member’s role and work with them to set SMART objectives in line with expectations and review performance ahead of the end of the probation period.
  • Deliver and maintain a Road to Competency pathway for each individual with in the there team
  • Meet regularly with your team to provide support, give direction, answer queries, monitoring performance and quality (working with SME’s to help support the technical aspects).

Performance Management

  • Take time to understand the Achieving My Potential framework
  • Work with team members to set and continually review SMART objectives for the performance reviews monthly, mid year and annual review basis.
  • Accountable for the completion of statutory training compliance and assigning additional training through the Workday platform
  • Use Management Information to track and improve productivity and quality performance requirements.
  • Drive a feedback culture throughout the team to enable team members take responsibility for obtaining feedback and job quality reviews enabling a robust understanding of their performance throughout the year
  • Instigate regular and insightful performance review processes with input from the technical team in order to provide honest and constructive feedback in a timely manner to the team members
  • Have open and honest coaching conversations to help team members to identify/address strengths
  • Identify succession pipelines in both technical and people management streams at all levels including areas of development and opportunities, feeding into wider local succession planning activity
  • Where appropriate, consult with the Hub manager and/or HR to ensure any performance issues are addressed consistently and in a timely fashion
  • Support the firm-wide cyclical performance and pay processes as required, providing a fair and balanced view on performance, quality and progression adhering to the firm’s framework in terms of pay and promotion activity.

Technical and Developmental Training

  • Obtain the SME support in this area and provide support and guidance for the team
  • Ensure team members have the relevant technical training for the role and approve delegate requests as appropriate
  • Ensure team member are aware of latest technical and methodology development

Collaboration & Communication

  • Working with the workflow team to ensure the required staffing levels are in line with seasonal peaks and any new activity.
  • Communicating effectively with various stakeholders, within SSC and the wider firm, on a regular basis, both verbally and written as appropriate and representing the Tax hub as required
  • Devise mechanism for regular feedback and communication with the technical Tax team and other SMEs supporting wider SSC activity and working with other departments (both within SSC and wider firm)  as required.
  • Drive and be accountable for the delivery of small to medium sized projects (alongside SMEs where appropriate) including working with multiple other departments and client facing teams to deliver timely results within both the Tax team and the wider firm

Technical requirements and professional skills:

  • Demonstrable experience of people leadership & management, with the ability to flex style as required
  • Evidence of strong coaching and development skills
  • Evidence of performance reviews and delivering policy driven outcomes
  • Demonstratable experience in MI creation, streamlining resulting in improved performance/productivity
  • IT skills - strong working knowledge of MS Office /Teams/ Excel, other MS Office products and similar desktop applications.
  • Excellent communication skills– both verbal and written
